Tumbler glass. Thermos Starbucks (Starbucks) tumbler (portable thermos glass) - “Tumbler (Thermal mug) Starbucks - plastic mugs, light and convenient on the road, as well as in everyday life, Photo of my tumbler from London.”. Good afternoon everyone

Good afternoon everyone!

I am a volunteer for one of the youth organizations. When I first joined this project, I noticed that many “old” people had these tall, twist-on plastic glasses. Then I thought: “Well, yes, they drink tea or coffee from them. They carry them with them. I probably don’t need such a thing at all...”

But over time, the idea of acquiring this miracle of Chinese industry (Starbucks produces its Tumblrs in China) matured and developed in my head.

They brought it to me from London - a friend went on vacation, I asked for it as a souvenir. But you can also buy it here in Russia. In general, they are found in almost any Starbucks cafe.

What can I say about the pros:

+ Keeps you warm longer than a regular open mug/glass. It’s convenient to sit at home at the computer and watch a movie. In the office you can make yourself some tea and keep it at your desk. At university and school, carry it with you to classes.

When empty it is quite light - convenient to carry. Fortunately, large tote bags are in fashion now;

+ Convenient for travel- on a train or car. Great help on winter bus tours;

It also helps a lot if your work sometimes forces you to go outside and travel for several hours from place to place;

+ Saving money- I began to often make coffee or tea in the morning at home, and then, instead of the usual buying the same drinks at McDonald’s, drink it on the go on the way to work. And at Starbucks, coffee is poured into Tumblr at a discount;

In the same Starbucks, you can ask for coffee to be poured into your Tumblr, thereby not using a plastic glass, which you could then simply throw away - benefit to nature tangible;

There are Tumblrs to which you can apply your own design - they have space under the outer layer of plastic where you can throw your photos or put any picture that interests you. Thus you will have unique glass, reflecting your personality;

Tumblrs are getting pretty interesting and unusual accessory. More and more often I see people on the street, holding a treasured glass in their hands.

Now about the disadvantages, of which I found only three:

It's still not a thermos- taking tea with you to the forest in a thermal mug is pointless - in cold air the liquid will become cold within two hours. But metal tumblers retain heat much longer than plastic ones;

Plastic tumblr not durable- there is a risk of dropping it and, I dare say, not every such fall can be endured;

Due to the same plastic itself tumblr it's warm outside, if you pour boiling water inside. It’s not hot, of course, but it’s better not to put it next to chocolate.

_____________________________________________________

Tumblr is with me almost every day. Over the three months of using it, I’ve already drunk quite a lot of things - tea and coffee, juice and lemonade, milk and kefir, milkshake, compote and once even a Martini =)

Yes, this may be a useless thing if you spend almost all your time at home, but if you have to move around the city for work or study, or you like to travel, then Tumblr will be a good companion)

Thank you for your attention to the review!

Almost every alcoholic drink has its own glassware: sake is served in small ceramic cups, beer at Oktoberfest - in massive liter mugs, champagne - in wine glasses. And for alcoholic mixes, there is no clear option: cocktail glasses vary in shape, volume and purpose. Let's look at the main types.

Tumbler

Tumbler (English “tumbler”). A short, wide glass with a thick bottom, often round in shape. Sometimes it has a convex bottom so that the taster cannot place it on the table without spilling the drink (hence the name) and is forced to hold the glass in his hand all the time, warming the drink. Originally created for whiskey, the term has now expanded to include an entire category of glasses, including old fashion, shot and others. The classic tumbler holds 150-300 ml and can be used to serve both pure spirits and cocktails based on bourbon, scotch or Irish whiskey.

Tumblr

Old Fashioned

Old Fashioned (translated from English as “old-fashioned”). A “short” tumbler is a rectangular glass with a thickened bottom, with a volume of 180 to 470 ml (the latter for a “double old-fashioned”). Used for strong spirits on the rocks (such as whiskey) or a number of cocktails - in particular, the classic aperitif Old Fashioned (whisky or bourbon with cane sugar and a couple of drops of Angostura), after which the glass is named.

Old fashion

Collins

Collins is a tall narrow cylindrical glass, volume 300-410 ml, long drinks cocktails are served in it. Sometimes used to serve non-alcoholic drinks such as soda or tropical fruit juice. The name comes from the Tom Collins cocktail (4 parts soda water, 3 parts gin, 2 parts fresh lemon juice and 1 part simple syrup).

Collins

Shot

Shot, from the English “shot” (in the context of alcohol - “in one gulp”), and not short - “short”, as is commonly believed. Small cocktail glasses, usually cylindrical in shape, but variations are possible. The first samples appeared in the USA at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The size varies from 20 to 100 ml depending on the serving (single or double) and country (the smallest shots are produced in Germany, Scandinavia, Serbia, the largest in Japan and Bulgaria).

Shooters are used to drink shot cocktails, which are often mistakenly called simply “shots.” These are strong alcoholic mixes, often layered, that do not need to be savored, but swallowed in one sitting, for example, B-52 or Hiroshima.

Shot

Martini glass, cocktail glass

The second name is a cocktail glass. Martini glass, in English is simply called cocktail glass, that is, “cocktail glass,” although variations specifically for Martini may be slightly more elegant. This is a vessel on a high thin leg with a cone-shaped bowl. It appeared at the end of the 19th century with the development of fashion for cocktails and typically holds from 90 to 300 ml, although there are exceptions. Traditionally, martinis and cocktails based on any vermouth are drunk from such glasses.

Cocktail glass

Margarita glass

Margarita glass, a variant of a champagne glass (cupita) but slightly modified. It has an original shape - the double bowl is similar to a glass placed in a “heap” and will buy a volume of 250-300 ml. “Margarita” serves not only the cocktail of the same name, for which the glass was created, but also any tequila-based drinks.

Glass of Margarita

Hurricane

Hurricane (from the English “hurricane”). This is a large cocktail glass , which holds almost 600 ml of drink. The vessel appeared in the middle of the 20th century and has an original shape: a short leg, a “pot-bellied” cone, tapering at the top.

Most of all, the glass resembles a vase or the bulb of an old kerosene lamp (hurricane lamp). The “Hurricane” serves a cocktail of the same name (equal parts of dark and light rum, half a portion of strong rum, fruit syrup and lemon juice to taste), as well as a variety of slings, “Blue Hawaii” and other mixes.

Hurricane

Highball

Highball, cone-shaped tall glass with a volume of 240-350 ml. Taller than an Old Fashioned, but lower and wider than a Collins. Serves highball cocktails (drinks based on strong alcohol with the addition of a generous portion of non-alcoholic component). Classic highball drinks are whiskey and soda, gin and tonic. The glass itself, as well as cocktails for it, appeared around the beginning of the 19th century.

Highball

Liqueur glass

Liqueur glass, a small glass for strong and sweet alcoholic drinks, for example, Baileys. Typically holds 30-60 ml of drink, shaped like a miniature wine glass, but other solutions are possible.

Liquor glass

Sour glass

Sour glass (from English “sour”). It is also known as a “double shot”; its shape resembles two cut cones (one larger, the other smaller), joined at the bottoms. Looks like an hourglass. Sometimes it is an ordinary glass with slightly beveled bowl walls. Volume 100 ml, appeared in the mid-19th century, intended for cocktails of the same name or other alcoholic drinks.

Sour

Irish Coffee mug

Irish Coffee mug - Irish coffee mug. It looks like a cross between a cup and a glass: the vessel has a short thick stem, a tulip-shaped bowl and a comfortable handle.

It appeared in the mid-20th century specifically to serve the hot cocktail of the same name: coffee with whiskey and cream. Now used for a variety of hot alcoholic drinks: mulled wine, grog, etc. Volume varies from 250 to 360 ml.

Irish Coffee Glass

Connoisseurs of elite alcoholic beverages who decide to purchase special glassware for alcohol often have questions about what a whiskey glass is called and how they differ. As you know, a lot depends on the shape of the glass. Properly selected glassware allows you to better experience the whole bouquet of the drink, and also tells about the refined taste of the hospitable host.

In the article:

What glasses do you drink whiskey from?

It is best to serve whiskey not in glasses, but in decanters or vessels called decanters. Thus, during the transfusion of alcohol, its taste and aroma are enhanced. It also allows those who wish to decide on the choice of how to drink the drink, for example, adding ice to it.

Thus, when choosing glassware for whiskey, you should take into account the quality of the drink, its variety, as well as your own preferences. If you want to add ice to your whiskey, it is better to choose a rocks glass, popular in bars and restaurants. However, it is better to enjoy high-quality single malt whiskey without any extraneous additives, then a tulip-shaped glass will help you to fully experience the whole bouquet.

Whiskey is a strong alcoholic drink, distinguished by special aromatic properties and made from various types of grain (rye, barley, corn, wheat). This noble drink has Scottish roots and a rich history, which means there are a large number of its fans in the world. If you consider yourself one of them, then you probably know from which glasses whiskey is drunk. But little things like dishes are of utmost importance if you want to enjoy whiskey and correctly perceive its taste and aroma.

What is a whiskey glass called?

Traditionally it is believed that glassware for this wonderful drink should be made of glass. There are also crystal glasses for whiskey. However, not only the substance is important, but also the form. Among the whiskey glasses, the following types are distinguished:

  1. Short glass, or shot. This whiskey glass takes its name from its small height and volume - up to 40 ml. True, the shot has a varied shape - straight, tapering towards the bottom, beveled towards the side, etc. As a rule, Short glass has a thickened bottom. A drink is drunk from such glasses in one sip; such containers are not suitable for tastings.
  2. Highball, old fashioned, tumbler (highball, old fashion, tumbler). Such glasses have an increased volume (about 200 ml), a thickened bottom and fairly thick walls, due to which the ice slowly melts in them. Highball is different in that its walls are higher. As for the toggle switch, it is notable for its barrel-shaped sides. By the way, there are original variations of such glasses. There is a sippy glass or a glass in the form of a smoking pipe. It is worth special mentioning the rotating glasses for whiskey, thanks to which you can enjoy the playing reflections in the drink for about 20 seconds. Of course, such unusual containers are used as original gifts.
  3. Nosin, or noiseing. This glass can easily be used as a whiskey tasting glass due to its shape. It has a thick stem and a narrowed top, which is why the whiskey vapor is concentrated and allows you to enjoy an unsurpassed aroma. The volume of nozzle usually does not exceed 100 ml.
  4. Tulip, tulip, tulip. Such elite whiskey glasses are a 100-200 ml container with a narrowed top, shaped like a tulip bulb, on a long thin stem.
  5. Snifter, sniffer. This 150 ml glass is similar in appearance to the tulip discussed above, only with less pronounced curves and on a higher stem.

What glasses do you drink different types of whiskey from?

The choice of a specific type of whiskey glass depends on the type of this noble drink. For the simplest whiskey, a regular shot is suitable, where the alcohol is not diluted and is drunk in one gulp. Most establishments offer customers a whiskey on the rocks or a diluted drink in a highball, old fashioned or Tumblr. Thanks to the thick walls and bottom, the ice in this glass melts slowly. It is believed that this type of glass is suitable for single malt and blended whiskeys, which have a fairly strong aroma.

It is recommended to drink high-quality complex and unblended whiskey in glasses of the Noising type. For an expensive single malt drink, the tulip and snifter are ideal, the shape of which allows you to maximize the aroma.

Whiskey glass manufacturers

There are a huge number of glass offers for this alcoholic drink. Of course, for ordinary consumers, any product purchased in a store will be suitable. But true connoisseurs will prefer quality dishes. These include world respectable companies, for example, Villeroy & Boch (Germany), Glencairn (Scotland), Riedel (Austria), Wilson & Morgan (Italy), etc. An excellent option would be crystal whiskey glasses that do not fade and preserve transparency. Recognized leaders are Cristal d'Arques (France), Top Line (Germany), Cristallerie Strauss (Brazil). A chic option would be whiskey glasses made of Bohemian glass (Hungary), the products of which are made of high-quality crystal in an unrivaled design.

There are also special glasses for martini.

Alcohol is a tradition, character and certain rules. When it comes to whiskey, there are quite a lot of traditions and rules. Perhaps the whole point is that they tried to surround the drink with an aura of mystery. Or perhaps all the rules for drinking whiskey are justified and really give you access to something new.

1 What glasses do you drink whiskey from?

Experts say that you can understand the taste of this drink only by drinking it from a properly selected glass. Almost everyone who begins to be interested in such nuances understands that whiskey is a collective concept. It is made in different countries, from different raw materials and according to different recipes. Therefore, there is nothing strange in the fact that each manufacturer offers a glass for their drink that maximizes its aroma, color and taste.

Not everyone will want to order glasses along with a bottle of whiskey, and there is no need... In the range of bar glass there are 6 options for glasses in which this alcohol is served. This nomenclature is simple, so you can easily buy the right set of whiskey glasses for your own bar.

  • Shot Glass - better known as a shot glass or glass, holds up to 40 ml of liquid. This is a versatile option for serving young bourbon and scotch. Most often, it is used when drinking whiskey in one gulp. It does not reveal any aroma, nor does it have any other special qualities. Its advantage is that such glass can also be used for a number of other alcoholic beverages.
  • Tumbler (low) or Highball (high) - containers that are most similar to a glass with a thick bottom and straight walls. Glass volume up to 200 ml. They are used to serve whiskey from Scotland and Ireland. Cocktails with bourbon are also prepared in these glasses. Most often, alcohol in these glasses is served with ice.
  • Nosing – the name itself suggests that this glass was created for snorting. Capacity volume up to 100 ml. Most often, it has a short, stable leg. The bowl is widened at the base and gradually tapers towards the top. This allows the aroma to open up and not disappear immediately. Blends are served in this glass.
  • The Tulip or tulip glass is better known as a glass for wine, but there is also a variety for whiskey. The volume of such a container reaches a maximum of 100 ml. On a not too long leg there is a classic tulip bowl, which is designed to concentrate the aromas of alcohol. Aged malt varieties are served in this glass.
  • Snifter is rarely found in Russian-speaking countries. It is very similar to a tulip-shaped glass, but has a more elongated bowl shape. Glass volume up to 150 ml. This glass is used only for serving.

These are the five main categories of glasses in which whiskey is served. Depending on which type of alcohol you drink most often, it is worth buying glass for your home. Also, don't hesitate to ask the bartender for the correct glass if he suddenly decides to serve you good alcohol in a low shot glass. Ultimately, you have the right to get everything that an expensive liquor has to offer.

2 Geometry of the glass and aroma of the drink

The type of glass is not an exhaustive characteristic. Sometimes a glass seems to fit the shape, but for some reason does not give the desired result. To avoid this, you need to understand how the geometry of the alcohol container reveals its capabilities.

To be completely honest, you can drink alcohol under 10 years old from regular tumblers; you won’t lose much. If we are talking about alcohol older than 8–10 years (much depends on the type of base), then the glasses for such whiskey need to be selected correctly. If you make a mistake, you will lose something valuable.

3 Glass or crystal?

According to tradition, glasses for good whiskey should be made of glass. Why did this happen? Probably the whole point is that at the time the rules for drinking this alcohol were formed, glass was a more affordable option. Although both then and now there are whiskey glasses made of Bohemian glass and crystal - expensive and very beautiful.

What is the practical problem of choosing a material for making containers for alcohol? Everything is simple here. Whiskey is not only taste and aroma, it is also a unique color. Therefore, the main requirement for a glass is transparency. The more transparent the material and the longer it stays that way, the better. Therefore, crystal has every right to claim a place in the home bar. Serving alcohol in crystal glassware in establishments is risky, based on practical experience, however, in some establishments you can find such beauty.

The perfect transparency of the crystal allows you to enjoy the color of the drink and prepare you for the richness of its taste.

The second important point in choosing the right glasses is thermal conductivity. The fact is that whiskey, like cognac, warms up in the hand. But glasses for cognac are quite thin, while glasses for whiskey are always equipped with a thick bottom. When looking at whiskey glass from this perspective, crystal is a better choice because it conducts heat much more efficiently than glass. Although most of the elite glass for alcohol is made using special technologies that guarantee the material all the necessary mechanical properties. However, if you have a choice, then don’t waste your time, buy good crystal whiskey glasses.

To buy obviously high-quality glasses for expensive whiskey, you can use two options. The first is to buy glass from the manufacturer. All self-respecting concerns develop glass, and you simply cannot find better glasses. The problem with this plan is that it is not only expensive, but also takes a long time to implement.

The second option is to buy glass for alcohol from well-known glassware manufacturers. Brands such as Glencairn, Villeroy&Boch, Riedel And Wilson&Morgan offer a large selection of first-class whiskey glasses of any type, age and place of production. Manufacturers of quality glasses do not end with this list. There are other companies that make equally expensive glasses for expensive whiskey. Today, there are stores of these brands in Russian-speaking countries, so this option will help you get the desired glasses quickly, but still expensive.

4 Rules of good manners

True gourmets drink whiskey from a special tasting glass – Whiskey Connoisseur Glass. It is perfectly transparent, made of fairly thin glass and very similar to a Snifter glass. Its main difference is the lid with which the glass is closed to collect maximum aroma. Naturally, this glass is only needed for high-quality, aged alcohol. In all other cases, you can and should do without it.

There were many more rules regarding the selection of glasses for whiskey than one could imagine. Despite the fact that practical people would simply drink good whiskey from what is in their grandmother’s cupboard, there is something to think about. To summarize, we can say the following about glasses for good whiskey:

  • they must either collect or help disperse the aroma of the alcohol;
  • they must conduct heat because this type of alcohol opens best when heated;
  • perfect transparency and absence of drawings is a huge plus;
  • and lastly, glasses of the whiskey you choose should bring you personal aesthetic pleasure.

If the glass meets these simple requirements, then you can take it. Even if you don't drink whiskey often, having a set of good glasses for it will be nice.
