How long can an engine run without changing engine oil? The service books of modern cars indicate a maintenance interval with an oil change of 15,000–20,000 km. And manufacturers of synthetics often increase the declared resource by another tens of thousands of kilometers. How reasonable are such figures? Will “long-living” damage the motor? Let's check it in practice.

THROUGH EUROPE AND ASIA

15,000 km is very far! About the same as from Lisbon to Vladivostok. Should you take a can of oil for replacement during such a mileage, or is a liter enough for topping up? Instead of the beauties of Europe and the expanses of Asia, we will see the walls of the test box: they have their own charms... And two identical engines will “drive” at once - VAZ’s eight-valve injection engines. This is the only way to ensure that the tested oils have identical operating conditions throughout their entire run. To bring the VAZ V8s closer to more modern engines, they increased the compression ratio by one and added an oil cooling system for the pistons.

The tests took so-called full synthetics of viscosity class 5W-40, and from the most popular brands: Castrol, Shell, Mobil, Esso, BP -Pi"), elf ("Elf"), Total ("Total") and ZIC ("Zik"). This set covers approximately three quarters of the market in this segment. According to the European classification, all selected oils belong to the high quality group - A3/B3/B4. The distribution by API quality classes is as follows: most oils are SM/CF, Castrol is SN/CF, the rest are SL/CF. In the photos and tables, the oils under study are arranged alphabetically. As usual, oils were purchased from specialized stores in two capitals. We had a long “run” awaiting us, lasting almost six months. We haven't done this before.

AND ON THE PACIFIC OCEAN

...we finished our hike. The remaining oils were poured into cans, the engines were disassembled, measurements and photographs were taken. 1. (Diagram on the left) comparison of the energy-saving effect of the tested oils and the ability to increase engine power. All oils are fresh, fresh from the canister, and as a base, that is, the initial reference bar, is a simple mineral water 10W-40 API SJ class (the diagrams open in full size by clicking the mouse) : 2. (Diagram on the right) and this is how the efficiency and power of engines deteriorated when the oils “aged”. Here the base for each oil is the same, only fresh. Would you say that a 4.5% increase in fuel consumption is not much? But consider fuel prices in Siberia and the Far East.

The time has come to answer the questions posed. Interestingly, there were no intermediate additions of oil - four liters of initial refueling was enough for each of the eight participants. But the oil consumption turned out to be different. The oils “Zik” and “Castrol” had the least amount: the engines consumed only 0.6–0.7 liters each. Other oils gave results from 1.2 to 1.5 liters, that is, taking into account the roughness of the measurement method (by drain), almost the same.

All the samples after draining were black and ugly - of course, there was so much plowing to do! But how much have their basic physical and chemical parameters changed? Well-known trends have been confirmed: the viscosity of all oils first decreases, then increases, the alkaline number decreases, and the acid number increases. In terms of changes in the alkaline number and the content of active elements, all oils performed well: not a single one gave any rejection indicators. This means that all manufacturers use high-quality additive packages. However, this is not surprising: you can count the number of additive manufacturers on one hand; these are serious specialized companies. But in terms of viscosity the picture is different. Compare: for the Korean Zik oil, the change in viscosity over “15,000 km” was practically within the measurement error. But “Esso” at the end of the “run”, somewhere already “in Siberia”, climbed beyond the limits of viscosity change allowed by the SAE class. This, of course, did not kill the engine, but it noticeably increased its gluttony. Of the other oils, BP oil came closest to the forbidden border. And the change in the behavior of the motor during control measurements confirmed this.

FIELD OF ADMISSION

We've sorted out the resource. What about the other parameters, especially those that automakers analyze when issuing permits? The main indicators of oil performance in engines - the level of deposits, the degree of energy saving and wear protection - are shown in the diagrams. All oils, as befits full synthetics of high quality classes, demonstrated their energy-saving functions. We did not find a big difference between them, but again a certain dependence of fuel consumption on high-temperature viscosity appeared. Again, it turns out that the engine prefers some optimal viscosity; any deviation from it to a lesser or greater extent leads to a deterioration in performance. And the oils that came closest to this optimum were Castrol and Zik. But the engine power requires greater viscosity, and this is understandable. Under maximum load conditions, friction units are in the most severe conditions, and here oils with high high-temperature viscosity provide them with better lubrication. Therefore, engines running on Total, Elf and BP oils received at least a small, but still noticeable bonus. Engine wear protection is determined both by the viscosity-temperature characteristics of the oil (its viscosity at high temperatures) and by the quality of anti-wear components. To evaluate the oil according to this indicator, we examine the degree of engine wear after identical test cycles. The minimum mass loss of crankshaft bearing shells and piston rings, taking into account the error of the method, was found in engines running on Shell, Zeke and Castrol oils. These parameters are indirectly confirmed by analysis of data on the content of wear products in oil samples taken at the end of the tests. And here the leaders are the same, and the “Korean” “Zik” found significantly less metal than in other oils. High-temperature oil deposits were examined by deposits on the side surfaces of the pistons. Experts gave points by comparing the resulting deposits with a special scale. The principle is simple. Black deposits over the entire surface - the highest score, six on the generally accepted scale. A clean piston without deposits - zero points. Typically, synthetics in terms of deposits do not rise above 1.0–1.5 points. Let's look at the results - everything is so. “Zeke”, “Shell” and both “French” ones: “Elf” and “Total” look a little better than others.

WE'VE FINISHED THE HIKE

So, what were you thinking “on the Pacific coast”? Did we do the right thing by not taking replacement oil “on the road”? And how much can you trust oil manufacturers who claim long service life for their products? Let's return to the original question: is every synthetic product capable of passing the service interval? Consumers on forums advocate for more frequent replacement - every eight to ten thousand. Oil workers, on the contrary, talk about 30,000 km. Well, our tests have shown: in such regimes, “not all oils are equally useful.” The same “Esso” actually fell exhausted after the finish line, but “Zik” would have survived the return journey. The recommendations of the ZR are as follows. For new cars operating in the warm season, you can safely be guided by the results obtained. But as the engine wears out, as with active winter use, the oil needs to be changed more often. The same applies to cases when runs are measured not so much in kilometers as in hours-long traffic jams. We will devote a separate article to this. NOT ALL SYNTHETICS ARE ABLE TO PASS THE SERVICE INTERVAL.

WHAT WERE CHECKED AND WHY

Motor oil is a canister and something liquid inside, consisting of a base oil and an additive package. The resource characteristics of the oil depend on the latter.

During engine operation, oil comes into contact with heated surfaces of parts. Its film, left by the piston rings on the cylinder wall, is heated by gases and subjected to high contact pressures. Oil does not like contact with crankcase gases: it is saturated with the products of incomplete combustion of fuel, oxidizing and absorbing wear products and other dirt formed during engine operation.

The main indicator of oil is viscosity. If not everything, then a lot directly depends on it: the quality of lubrication of friction units, wear rate, friction losses. And also, indirectly, its consumption due to waste, exhaust gas toxicity and even the temperature of engine parts.

The operating viscosity of the oil is determined both by the properties of the base oil and by the amount and parameters of special additives - the so-called thickeners. These are polymers that change their properties under cyclic exposure to temperatures. The classic picture of changes in viscosity is as follows: first it falls, then it begins to increase. An excessive decrease in viscosity sharply increases the wear rate, and its increase significantly worsens the engine's efficiency and its starting properties, increases the toxicity of exhaust gases and oil waste. The range of permissible oil viscosity for our SAE class is from 12.5 to 16.3 cSt. Therefore, the first criterion for the clinical death of an oil is that its viscosity at some stage of testing goes beyond the permissible range. An important function of oil is to clean the engine and not get it dirty. Appropriate additives are responsible for the quality of washing, and the ability not to stain is determined by the stability and quality of the base oil. It is customary to separate high-temperature and low-temperature deposits. The first ones form on the side surfaces of the pistons. They are the most dangerous because they interfere with the work of the piston rings and can lead to a complete loss of their mobility, that is, to seizure. And the fixed ring no longer works. The result is compression drops. And the smoke from the exhaust is like in a football stadium after a goal is scored. Oil consumption begins to sharply approach fuel consumption. What about low-temperature deposits? They form in the oil pan, on the walls of the engine crankcase, and in the operating area of the camshafts. But the worst thing is the accumulation of deposits in the oil channels: they can become clogged. The washing ability of the oil decreases as it works - detergent additives are activated. This is partly controlled by the oil base number, and directly by the level of deposits formed after a long test cycle. Oil, absorbing fuel combustion products containing sulfur, nitrogen oxides and other “pleasures” during operation, accumulates acids. They are only partially neutralized by alkaline detergent additives. And “sour” oil becomes aggressive towards the engine. Therefore, the acid number of the oil is also its rejection indicator. In a very advanced case, oil separation may occur - the so-called loss of the additive package. They remain in sediment, and already fairly aged base oil begins to circulate through the engine lubrication system. Naturally, it does not possess any functional properties necessary for the motor. This is also a sign of oil death. All of the above makes clear the criteria we have adopted for the end of oil service life. 1. Viscosity goes beyond the limits determined by the SAE class. 2. A sharp (more than twofold) drop in the alkaline number and a sharp increase in the acid number. 3. Loss of the additive package, induced by a sharp change in the content of active components in the oil - phosphorus, zinc, calcium. In addition, we evaluate the energy-saving functions of the oil, which characterize the level of friction losses in the engine, as well as the protective functions, evaluated by the wear rates of the main parts. In principle, these are the main quality parameters that are analyzed when an oil is approved for use in specific types of engines.

1. BP Visco 5000

Classification: SAE 5W-40, API SL/CF, ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 Approvals: VW 50200/50500, MB 229.1/229.3, BMW LL-98, Porsche Approximate price: 1100 rub. for 4 l The cheapest of all synthetics tested. It justifies the price, it lasted the mileage. But it came quite close to the resource limit. High high-temperature viscosity ensured a place in the group of leaders in engine power. Good balance of price and quality. Quite a high rate of aging. The level of deposits is slightly higher than that of the leaders in this indicator.

2. Castrol Magnatec C3

Classification: SAE 5W-40, API SN/CF, ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4, C3 Approvals: VW 50200/50500, BMW LL-04, MB 229.31, RN 0700/0710 This oil is of the highest API quality group, which has been confirmed by tests: both in terms of protection and energy-saving functions, it is at the top of the ratings. We have noticed its aging, but it is still very far from the rejection indicators. So 15,000 km is not the limit for him. Low waste consumption, good protective and energy-saving properties. Low result in terms of sediment level.

3. elf Excellium NF

Classification: SAE 5W-40, API SL/CF, ACEA A3/B4 Approvals: VW 50200/50500, MB 229.3, Porsche A40 Approximate price: 1380 rub. for 4 l One of two oils of a relatively modest API quality group is only SL. However, we did not find any fundamental deterioration in its properties compared to oils of a higher class (according to API). Moreover, in terms of resource indicators, elf clearly outperformed most of them. Good resource indicators, high cleaning properties. It is logical to expect better wear protection. Yes, and a little expensive.

4. Mobil Super 3000

Classification: SAE 5W-40, API SM/CF Approximate price: 1620 rub. for 4 l The most expensive synthetic purchased. The oil was among the leaders in all key indicators. And it burns little, and washes well, and everything is in order with the motor protection. Resource indicators are at the level. Low waste consumption, good cleaning properties, good resource indicators. The price is too high compared to other oils.

5. Esso Ultron

Classification: SAE 5W-40, API SM, ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 Approvals: VW 50200/50500, MB 229.3, Porsche A40, BMW LL-01, GM LL-B-025, RN 0710 Inexpensive high quality synthetics. But this is the only oil that required replacement at the end of the run; its viscosity fell outside the SAE class. However, this did not kill the engine. There are large reserves for other rejection parameters. Price. A good option for seasonal use with an oil change during the transition from winter to summer and back. Good cleaning properties and low tendency to deposits. Compared to other synthetics, the resource turned out to be too small.

6. Shell Helix HX8

Approvals: BMW LL-01, MB 229.5, VW 50200/50500, RN 0700/0710 Approximate price: 1350 rub. for 4 l Another representative of the group of leaders, which was included in the totality of the results shown: good cleaning ability, excellent protective properties, long service life. Over 15,000 km of plowing, the oil did not change its pour point one degree. This is a sign of a very good base. High resource, excellent protective characteristics. In terms of oil consumption, the figures are not the highest.

7. Total Quartz 9000

Classification: SAE 5W-40, API SM/CF, ACEA A3/B4 Approvals: Peugeot Citroen B71 2296, VW 50200/50500, MB 229.3, Porsche A40, BMW LL-01, GM LL-B-025 Approximate price: 1320 rub. for 4 l This “Frenchman” has one of the best resource indicators. The high rate of high-temperature viscosity brought it to first place in terms of engine power performance. It washes well, but the fumes are not all right. And this is also a consequence of significant viscosity in the operating area of the piston rings. Good power indicators, low level of deposits, high service life. Large waste expense.

8. ZIC XQ

Classification: SAE 5W-40, API SM/CF, ACEA A3/B3/B4 Approvals: MB 229.5, VW 50200/50500, VW 50301, BMW LL-01, Porsche Approximate price: 1250 rub. for 4 l With this oil, one could turn around in Vladivostok and drive back to Lisbon without any top-ups. In all respects it differs significantly from the others. The freezing point is 10–15 degrees lower than others. There is significantly less metal in oil, in some cases several times less. And this is an indisputable confirmation of the protective properties. And the viscosity of the oil “in Vladivostok” turned out to be almost the same as “in Portugal”. The leader in most positions, while the price is very reasonable. What if you need to fill the engine with not four, but three liters? An opaque metal canister will force you to do this at random.

QUESTION ANSWER

What does the need to add oil during the service period indicate - an imperfect engine, incorrectly selected oil, or a technical malfunction of the engine?

It depends on what kind of oil and how much you add. Oil consumption is inevitable. The oil film left by the piston in the cylinder is heated by gases and evaporates (fumes). How much oil will fly into the pipe depends on its properties, operating modes, outside temperature, and the degree of engine wear. The instructions for the car most often provide data on standard oil consumption, but they are approximate. For most modern engines, consumption of up to a liter per 3000–4000 km of quiet city driving is quite normal. Some cars have a standard consumption of up to a liter per 1000 km. The preposition “before” is important here. If it’s more, welcome to the service.

Life tests of anything are extremely expensive. It is necessary to simulate real operating conditions as accurately as possible, record the results obtained, analyze them and draw the correct conclusion about the tests performed.

We are familiar with vehicle endurance testing. This is done not only by leading Western auto publications, but also by the automotive press of our country. The newspaper "Autoreview" has already "drove" more than one car to the resource. The magazine "Behind the Wheel" also deals with this area. But this time we will analyze the resource test not of cars, but of synthetic motor oils for the engine.

Motor oils with a viscosity class of 5W40 according to SAE were tested by the magazine “Behind the wheel”, and a test of oils with the index 5W30 was carried out by the newspaper “Autoreview”.

Both publications had the same task - to competently compare motor oils, obtaining the most objective results. But the methods are different. The magazine "Behind the Wheel" began testing in laboratory conditions, pouring test oils into two VAZ engines with injection, which had to be modified to bring them closer to the engines of modern cars. And the Autoreview newspaper has acquired several identical second-generation Ford Focuses with a 1.6 naturally-aspirated gasoline engine (100 hp) and manual transmission. All the cars were practically new, but during the tests they had to drive 10,000 km to check the oils poured into their engines.

Magazine "Behind the wheel"

The list of tested oils included Castrol Magnatec C3, Shell Helix HX8, Mobil Super 3000, Esso Ultron, BP Visco 5000, Elf Excellium NF, Total Quartz 9000 and ZIC XQ Fully Synthetic motor oils. Together these oils make up 75% of the Russian market. According to the European quality classification, they all belong to the high-quality group A3/B3/B4. And according to the classification of the American API system (American Petroleum Institute) - most oils belong to the SM/CF category, Castrol oil - to SN/CF, others - to SL/CF. In layman's terms, this means that oils of these categories are suitable for use in modern gasoline and diesel engines of both passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

The “Behind the Wheel” test engines must operate in a mode corresponding to a mileage of 15,000 km, which is the service interval for most cars. It is noteworthy that during the entire period of operation of the engines, topping up oil was never required: four liters of one canister (oil from each manufacturer was poured into such canisters) was enough for all eight brands. The waste took 0.6-0.7 liters of ZIC XQ Fully Synthetic and Castrol Magnatec C3 oils. The remaining oils were consumed more - from 1.2 to 1.5 liters over the entire distance.

BP Visco 5000 – synthetic motor oil SAE 5W-40, test

MODEL FEATURES

Motor oil BP Visco 5000 with a viscosity of 5W-40 (according to SAE), according to the manufacturer, has the CleanGuard protective system. The manufacturer is very vague about the claimed technology. From what is available, we can conclude that CleanGuard prevents the formation of soot and its clumping into lumps. This is an all-season synthetic motor oil for diesel and gasoline engines of passenger cars and minibuses (small commercial vehicles), which is designed to ensure engine cleanliness, reduce wear of its parts and increase their service life under intensive vehicle use. This oil is officially approved by leading automakers and is suitable for use in engines of most manufacturers.

The manufacturer also claims a reduced oil consumption for waste.

According to the classification of the American Petroleum Institute, BP Visco 5000 oil has a quality code of API SL/CF, according to the European ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4.

TEST RESULTS

BP Visco 5000 is the cheapest motor oil among the synthetic products tested. BP oil withstood engine operation equivalent to fifteen thousand kilometers. But a little more and it would have gone beyond what is permitted - at the end of the run the oil viscosity increased significantly, which negatively affected the efficiency of the power unit. Of the minuses, it should also be noted that the viscosity began to increase immediately after the engine started running.

But the power has increased slightly. Deposits on the parts of the cylinder-piston group of chemical reaction products, alas, are slightly higher than those of rivals, the maximum in the group. At the same time, 1.4 liters of oil burned during the test, this is one of the highest figures in the test. So if you looked at the oil dipstick, you would see a mark below the minimum. Engine wear protection when using BP Visco 5000 synthetic motor oil is mediocre, which is why the iron content in the drained oil turned out to be quite high.

Synthetic motor oil BP Visco 5000, despite the fact that it was the cheapest in the test, survived the entire 15 thousand km of the test run, but literally a little more and the viscosity value would have gone beyond the permissible SAE limits, and there would have been no oil left in the engine due to waste of 1.4 liters.

Castrol Magnatec C3 – synthetic motor oil SAE 5W-40, test

MODEL FEATURES

Castrol Magnatec 5W-40 C3 is a synthetic motor oil suitable for use in all seasons. the manufacturer states that it contains special molecules (Intelligent Molecules) that provide reliable and long-term protection of engine parts, helping to increase its service life by attracting to the engine surfaces and forming a strong, protective oil film on them, protecting friction pairs from wear. This ensures reliable protection of important parts such as the camshaft or valve lifters. Castrol motor oil is tested and approved by ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) and API (American Petroleum Institute).

Castrol Magnatec 5W-40 C3 oil is intended for use in modern gasoline and diesel engines, including engines with turbocharging, intercooler, direct fuel injection, Common Rail systems for diesel engines, catalytic afterburners, as well as diesel particulate filters (DPF). . Magnatec 5W-40 C3 engine oil is perfect for engines of those cars for which the manufacturer recommends oils of ACEA A3/B3/B4, C3 or API SM/CF viscosity class SAE 5W-40.

Castrol Magnatec 5W-40 C3 oil is approved by Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz for use in both gasoline and diesel engines. Bench testing using the latest radiation wear measuring equipment has shown that Magnatec Diesel provides greater component protection than traditional oils, especially during engine start-up. In addition, this oil has high stability of viscosity characteristics throughout its service life, thereby maintaining both engine power and throttle response, and its efficiency at a stable level from oil change to oil change.

Castrol Magnatec 5W-40 C3 protects the engine from wear under a wide range of operating conditions and driving styles: high ambient temperatures; starting and warming up; traffic jams; high-speed highways - at all stages of vehicle operation.

TEST RESULTS

The American Petroleum Institute has awarded Castrol Magnatec C3 oil the highest API SM/CF quality level. This is the only SM class oil tested by Za Rulem magazine. The simulation of the 15,000th throw march only proved this. The oil is really of high quality. Over a large number of kilometers, the publication’s experts, although they noticed signs of aging of the oil, are still far from reaching a dangerous level of thickening. Over the entire test cycle, the kinematic viscosity decreased by slightly more than one from 13.34 to 14.42 cSt. The consumption of Castrol Magnatec C3 oil for waste was not high - 0.9 liters. But at the same time, the level of oil deposits on the cylinder walls turned out to be one of the highest in the test, although the iron content in the used oil turned out to be one of the lowest in the test. At the same time, an increase in power and a decrease in fuel consumption before testing by 2.6 and 4.4%, respectively, were noticed, then by the end of the “run” these values leveled out and an increase in fuel consumption by 3.1% was noted.

Castrol Magnatec C3 synthetic motor oil gave conflicting results on the one hand, the declared high quality according to the API classification - SM/CF. On the other hand, there is a high level of deposits on the cylinder walls.

Elf Excellium NF – synthetic motor oil SAE 5W-40, test

MODEL FEATURES

Elf ExcelliumNF synthetic motor oil, viscosity 5W40 according to SAE, is recommended for all gasoline and diesel engines of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. A highly effective synthetic lubricant, according to the manufacturer, is suitable for all types of vehicle and engine operation for any driving style and provides excellent protection in the gas distribution system. In addition, the French manufacturer promises reliable engine protection even at extreme temperatures, as well as increased intervals between replacements (which is completely contraindicated with Russian fuel).

The manufacturer claims that Elf ExcelliumNF oil meets the most stringent requirements of the following specifications: ACEA A3 - for the latest generation gasoline engines; ACEA B4 - for diesel engines with direct injection; API SL - for the latest generation gasoline engines; API CF - for the latest generation diesel engines.

TEST RESULTS

Elf Excellium NF synthetic motor oil performed well in the motor test. the change in kinematic viscosity over the entire period of operation turned out to be very small, only 0.52 cSt, which indicates the high stability of the polymer thickener used. Oil consumption for waste was average and amounted to 1.27 liters. At the same time, experts noted a low level of high-temperature deposits, which will also have a positive effect on an engine filled with Elf Excellium NF oil.

Due to the stability of its characteristics, the oil passed the fuel economy test quite smoothly. An increase in power and a decrease in fuel consumption before testing by 3.5 and 2.6%, respectively, were noted, then by the end of the “run” these values leveled out and an increase in fuel consumption by 1.85% was noted. The results of the oil in the test for the proportion of iron in the waste product, which Elf Excellium NF turned out to be one of the largest in the test, were not the most successful.

Elf Excellium NF synthetic motor oil showed excellent quality of the polymer thickener and stability of characteristics throughout the test cycle, but it was also a leader in terms of engine wear.

Mobil Super 3000 X1 – SAE 5W-40 synthetic motor oil, test

MODEL FEATURES

Mobil oils represent, in a way, a line of first-grade motor oils. On the official website of the company itself, the following is written on this topic: “synthetic motor oil with an advanced level of properties for passenger cars.”

Shell Helix HX8 – SAE 5W-40 synthetic motor oil, test

MODEL FEATURES

Shell Helix HX8 synthetic motor oil is formulated with a unique active cleaning technology to prevent dirt buildup and sludge formation. Shell Helix HX8 is a fully synthetic oil specially formulated to improve engine performance and performance. This ensures that the engine operates at maximum efficiency throughout the entire oil change interval. Shell's unique low viscosity oil formulation is designed to provide additional fuel economy and engine protection over long periods between drains.

In order to clean and protect the engine, the oil must maintain its performance characteristics until it is replaced during the next vehicle maintenance. Some car manufacturers recommend extended oil change intervals, making the oil's ability to maintain its properties even more important.

Throughout its life, Shell Helix HX8 oil must disperse more and more dirt, retain dirt and keep it out of the engine.

High shear resistance - maintains stable viscosity throughout the entire oil change interval.

Specially selected synthetic base oils reduce volatility and, as a result, oil consumption and the need to top up.

Reduced vibration and reduced engine noise - for a smoother ride and less noise when driving.

According to the manufacturer, the characteristics of Shell Helix motor oils not only meet the requirements of international specifications, which are becoming more stringent every year, but also, as a rule, exceed them.

Shell Helix HX8 exceeds the following specifications: API SM/CF; ACEA A3/B3/B4;BMW LL-01; Mercedes-Benz 229.5; VW 502 00/505 00.

TEST RESULTS

Shell Helix HX8 synthetic motor oil showed good results in terms of thermal-oxidative stability. The value of kinematic viscosity remained during the entire test within the limits specified in SAE, while changes in viscosity from 12.73 cSt at the beginning of the test to 14.37 cSt after its completion can be considered small. It would be nice if there was less waste, but there’s a small hole here: 1.2 liters burned out while the engine was running. But high-temperature deposits turned out to be small, and in terms of this indicator, Shell Helix HX8 is clearly in the group of leaders. The oil also turned out to be a leader in terms of the minimum amount of iron content in the waste.

During testing, an increase in power and a decrease in fuel consumption before testing by 2.55 and 3.7%, respectively, were noted, then by the end of the “run” these values leveled out, and an increase in fuel consumption by 1.55% was noted.

Shell Helix HX8 synthetic motor oil performed well during tests. Confirming the thermal-oxidative stability of the additive formula stated by the manufacturer.

TEST RESULTS

Total Quartz 9000 synthetic motor oil left mixed impressions. On the one hand, changes in kinematic viscosity did not lead to going beyond the limits established by the SAE classification; on the other hand, there was a violation of the established limits at the beginning of the test, when the viscosity turned out to be lower than the established one and one of the largest, in percentage terms, a 22% change in viscosity during the test. We were also not pleased with the iron content in the waste oil, which turned out to be quite high. Also, the highest oil burn in the test was 1.5 liters. But the level of high-temperature deposits turned out to be low.

During testing, an increase in power and a decrease in fuel consumption before testing by 3.7 and 3.2%, respectively, were noted, then by the end of the “run” these values leveled out, and an increase in fuel consumption by 1.9% was noted.

It should also be added that according to the classification of the American Petroleum Institute, ZIC XQ Fully Synthetic oil has a quality class of API SM/CF, according to the European ACEA A3/B4.

TEST RESULTS

ZIC XQ Fully Synthetic synthetic motor oil turned out to be the test leader in many respects. Firstly, the change in kinematic viscosity during the entire test turned out to be insignificant, only 0.52%. Secondly, waste consumption turned out to be minimal, only 0.58 liters. And this is for 15 thousand kilometers! Further achievements include the minimum test value for iron content in used oil. In addition to this, the pour point of the oil turned out to be lower than all other competitors and was equal to -57 C at the beginning of the test and -55 C after the end of the test. For example, BP Visco 5000 oil froze at the end of its run at -35 C.

The formation of deposits on engine parts is also minimal throughout the test.

During testing, an increase in power and a decrease in fuel consumption before testing by 3.1 and 4.7%, respectively, were noted, then by the end of the “run” these values leveled out, and an increase in fuel consumption by 1.15% was noted.

ZIC XQ Fully Synthetic synthetic motor oil was the discovery of this test. No one expected such high performance characteristics from it. So we recommend taking note of this product.

The Autoreview newspaper test included oils with a viscosity index of 5W30 according to SAE. Among them were Castrol Magnatec A1, G-Energy F Synth EC Secured fuel economy, Mobil Super FE Special (fuel economy), Motul 8100 Eco-nergy, Shell Helix Ultra Extra, THK Magnum Professional F, Total Quartz 9000 Future fuel economy and ZIC XQ LS - eight oils in total.

The cars were prepared for the test by first running them in factory oil, after which the first batch of test oils was poured into the car engines, and after 25 minutes of the engine idling, another oil change was performed, and then the test itself began.

For eight types of oil - eight Focuses and four drivers. While one group of cars is accumulating mileage around the Dmitrovsky Automotive Test Site, the other is cooling down. Every machine hour the roles of the machines changed. Traffic on the expressway of the test site is strictly regulated: speed 130 km/h, third gear, 6000 rpm. In this mode - four days. And on the fifth - traffic jams. On this day, each Ford Focus idled for three hours. Then the route through traffic jams is 1.5 km long. Then an hour to cool down, and then another three hours of traffic jams.

The result is actually 10,000 km traveled, during which the engines ran for 100 hours at 6,000 rpm, idled for 54 hours and made 45 cold starts.

But we noticed the main feature of the test conducted by the newspaper later, when we began to evaluate the results obtained. The behavior of motor oils, their oxidation characteristics and the results obtained did not fit into the usual picture shown by the tests of the magazine “Behind the Wheel” and our early tests of the oxidative dynamics of motor oils.

We began to look more closely at the results obtained, and it seemed strange to us, how is it possible that fuel consumption is less when driving on used oil than on new one? The newspaper's experts do not answer this question in the article, but the results of the test of the Za Rulem magazine directly indicate the opposite trend. And a simple logical analysis shows that driving on fresh, thinner oil should be more economical than on old and thickened oil.

The second significant question about the test arose when studying the results of the Mobil Super FE Special oil test. It is indicated that 2.62 liters of this engine oil were burned during the run, while the change in viscosity was only 15.92%, which is the average result for the test. With a volume of oil with a filter of 4.1 liters, it turns out that 64% of the oil was burned, and the viscosity changed by only 16%?

The answer to this question lay in the conditions of the test, we quote: “ We also added fresh oil to other engines: after each sampling, the same level was set in all crankcases, up to the MAX mark on the dipstick. And so that the “renewal coefficient”, that is, the ratio between fresh and already used oil, is the same, from those cars where waste consumption was the least, part of the used oil was drained. During the entire test cycle, we added 1.4 liters of fresh oil to all cars.".

It turns out that oil was constantly added to the engine and the second part of the race, from 5,000 to 10,000 thousand kilometers, the engine ran on a mixture of old oil and new. Moreover, the share of new oil ranged from 32% to 64%. This explains why the average fuel consumption in the second half of the test run is lower than in the first half.

To all this we must add the anomalous behavior of kinematic viscosity.

The standard behavior of oil in an engine is as follows:

The kinematic viscosity of the new oil must be within the limits specified by SAE requirements. The limit values for the group are set with fairly large tolerances. The oil should not fall outside this viscosity tolerance during the entire period of operation in the vehicle. But as soon as little gets into the engine, aging processes immediately begin. It comes under the influence of high temperatures in the area of the upper piston ring and two counter processes begin to occur. On the one hand, the oil base begins to thicken; on the other hand, the polymer thickener begins to break down, which leads to dilution of the oil and a decrease in kinematic viscosity. Thus, first the oil thins out due to the operation of the polymer thickener, and when its “reserve” runs out and it does not have time to compensate for the increase in viscosity, the viscosity curve begins to go up and the oil begins to thicken. At the moment when the viscosity of the old oil is equal to the viscosity of the new one, this is the optimal moment to replace it. Since the oil viscosity will only increase further, which can lead to tragic consequences for the engine.

In our oxidation tests and the ZR test, just such a trend is observed, but the AP test shows a completely different picture. None of the oils tested were thicker than new! Viscosity in all samples and at 5000 km and 10000 km is lower than the original factory viscosity. What are such good oils? No, they just tested a mixture of new and old oil.

As a result, it turns out that of all the parameters tested by the AutoReview newspaper, only its waste consumption can be objectively used to assess the antioxidant properties of motor oil.

However, we still decided to present the results obtained in the test.

And the oils turned out to have good anti-wear properties and the iron content in the used oil did not exceed 20 mg, which was the average in the test, while the oil showed a fairly high value of the residual alkaline number and with a relative change of less than 50%. You can also positively evaluate the reduction in the amount of oil waste. 1.74 liters is certainly not small, but this is the average for the test. At the end of the test, the oil had the highest acid number in the test, which indicates the need to replace it.

The synthetic motor Castrol Magnatec A1 performed well during the test; it initially has high cleaning properties, but when used in Russia, where there is a high probability of refueling with high-sulfur fuel, experts recommend changing it more often.

When using this oil, you must follow all the manufacturers' specific instructions, including the recommended viscosity values and the specified intervals for replacing the lubricant mixture.

Sorry, there are no surveys available at this time.

American Esso motor oil is familiar to many car enthusiasts. But few people know that the brand belongs to a huge corporation – Exxon Mobil. In the lubricants market, certain types of technical fluids have become particularly widespread - the semi-synthetic composition Esso Ultra with a viscosity of 10W40 and Esso Ultron 5W40. These varieties have proven themselves well in use, namely in fairly worn out engines. It is worth noting that half of our country’s vehicle fleet consists of just such vehicles.

Esso lubricant range, review

Esso oil fluids meet all requirements and standards, which allows you to reliably protect your car engine. From a large product range, everyone can purchase motor oil according to their needs, that is, choose a product for a specific vehicle, based on the specific recommendations of the manufacturer. The Esso range includes both mineral lubricants and synthetic and semi-synthetic formulations. In addition, the properties of the company’s motor oils meet the needs of automotive manufacturers.

Mineral oils of the Uniflo trademark are presented in two variations, with viscosity indicators SAE 10W40 and SAE 15W40. These compounds, which ensure operation in extreme conditions, are used in both gasoline and diesel engines.

The main properties of oil fluids are performance reserves and excellent antifriction data. Additionally, these etherols are able to protect the motor system from unwanted deposits and are used all year round.

The mineral composition of the Uniflo Diesel brand is used only in motor power units. Its main advantages are insignificant thickening and excellent cleaning properties. Can be used at any time of the year.

Esso Extra lubricants are intended for use in engines manufactured after the 80th year of the last century. Suitable for both gasoline and diesel power units. The main “trump card” is low cost, but this does not affect the useful characteristics of the oil. Oxol provides optimal engine care, while eliminating breakdowns and increasing service life. Etherol is not recommended for use in engines of newly purchased vehicles, as it does not meet the modern needs of automakers.

Semi-synthetic varieties of Esso Ultra lubricants have increased antifriction performance. As a result, their use is justified in vehicles that operate under extreme conditions. Suitable for any type of engine. The anti-friction property allows you to reduce fuel consumption and increase the service life of the engine.

Synthetic compositions are represented by the Ultron and Ultron TD brands. The main difference between the substances is that the first lubricant component is intended for use in engines of any type, and the second only for the diesel variety. But in general, they have similar technical characteristics, for example, they protect the motor from premature wear and oxidation. An important factor here is the special additive package included in Ultron oils.

Popular lubricant models from Esso

The most popular compounds among car owners are Extra 15W40 and Ultron 5W40. All these varieties are suitable for use in vehicle propulsion systems at any time of the year, that is, Extra oils are all-season. If during operation all the necessary recommendations for changing the lubricant are followed, then etherol can protect the engine from wear of the components and mechanisms included in its structure.

Autolubricant Extra 15W40 can be used in gasoline engines that require the use of oxol with API SF performance level. In addition, the lubricating fluid is applicable for use in diesel engines for which API CC level compositions are intended. Before use, pay close attention to the replacement intervals specified by the manufacturer.

Ultron 5W40 lubricants are a fully synthetic product with good antifriction performance under difficult operating conditions. The oil is intended for all types of passenger vehicles. The lubricant has high fluidity, which allows it to easily quickly lubricate engine components. Etherol Ultron 5W40 has certain advantages:

  • allows you to protect the car’s power unit, even in low temperatures;
  • has good resistance to oxidation processes;
  • increases the service life of the motor.

It also reduces fuel consumption due to the use of special additives.

Special products from Esso

Let's look at several types of Esso products that can be purchased in our country.

Esso Ultra 10W 40
