Name history

The name of the whiskey "Clan MacGregor" allowed to give this drink Prince Gregor McAlpin. He also allowed the family coat of arms of his clan to be placed on the label.

The MacGregor family in the Middle Ages was famous and quite strong. They managed to hold their own lands for a long time with the help of knights. But to King Robert, another clan, the Campbells, presented false documents transferring the ownership of the MacGregor clan's land. The deal went through, and the knights were left without their possessions, but they did not give up just like that, but continued to defend their rights by force.

In 1603, they were nevertheless forced to liquidate the clan, and they went underground, engaging in theft and robbery.

Features whiskey Clan MacGregor

The Clan MacGregor scotch recipe is a closely guarded secret. It is based not only on spring water and malt of the highest quality, but also on the hard work of the Grants and the amazing charisma and character of the MacGregor family.

Whiskey has truly unique tasting properties:

  1. aroma - scotch absorbed floral and fruity shades characteristic of the Speyside highlands;
  2. taste - a palette of shades of citrus, pear, plum and apple goes well with a classic malt flavor;
  3. aftertaste - fresh and soft, rich and oblong;
  4. color - a classic light golden hue gives whiskey aesthetic beauty.

Scotch whiskey features

Whiskey is a fairly strong variety of alcohol with a strength of about 40-50%. However, among manufacturers there are those who cook it even stronger. Various grain crops are used for production, and the production technology involves the use of distillation and malting processes. In order for the drink to be ready to drink, it is necessary to keep it in an oak barrel for a long time.

The Scottish variety is called scotch, in fact, the word Scotch itself means Scottish. Moreover, Scottish scotch in this country acts almost as a national drink.

Several centuries ago, scotch alcohol was recommended by doctors as a medicine. Its distinctive feature can be called the presence of a smoky shade. It appears during peat drying, at the same time there are varieties that do not have this color trait.

  • This type of alcohol is distinguished by a special delicate aroma, taste, and has a special preparation technology.
  • Refined taste, as well as a smoky shade, are achieved due to the peculiarities of preparing and drying barley grains in a special oven, which is heated with peat.
  • The semi-finished product is poured into special sherry casks, where it is aged for quite a long time.

In Scotland, it is called "properly made" whiskey. Many factories have been built in this country for its production, but the most famous is Highland, located in a mountainous area. Here, special traditions of the production of this elite drink are observed.

The concept of "Scotch" as an alcoholic beverage is defined at the legislative level, according to which it can be a product that satisfies a number of conditions:

  1. It is produced in Scotland by malting barley and adding water (only whole grains of other cereals can be added). These cereal crops are processed into must by strict adherence to special technologies.
  2. The semi-finished product is distilled with an alcohol content of 94%.
  3. In the finished product, the alcohol strength should be at the level of 40%.
  4. The product must be aged in special warehouses in Scotland. Only oak barrels serve as containers for aging, their volume should not exceed 700 liters, and the aging period should exceed 3 years.

Production

The first step is preparing barley malt by drying carefully selected and cleaned barley. Barley is soaked and germinates for 7-10 days, then dried again. For drying malt in Scotland, hot smoke from the combustion of peat, charcoal and beech shavings is used. Because of this, Scotch whiskey tends to have a rich flavor.

  • After drying, the malt is crushed and poured with hot water, then the mixture is aged for 8-12 hours.
  • The cooled resulting wort is poured into large containers, where yeast is added.
  • Fermentation lasts about 48 hours at a temperature of approximately 36 degrees. The resulting low-alcohol drink called "malted milk" is sent to distillers.

Distillation takes place more often twice, sometimes 3 times. After the first distillation, the liquid with a strength of 25-30% is distilled a second time. At the exit from the second apparatus, whiskey is obtained with a strength of up to 70%. The resulting drink is diluted with water up to 50-63%. The shape of distillation cubes significantly affects the taste and quality of whiskey, so each distillery has an original apparatus with its own shape and volume.

Next, whiskey is aged in oak barrels for a certain amount of time for each drink. After aging, the drink is filtered through paper membranes at a temperature of 2-10 degrees, diluted with spring water to the desired strength.

  2. Someone likes more expensive drinks, but after a hard day at dinner, they also don’t mind missing a glass or two of Clan MacGregor whiskey.
  3. There are some people who find this drink terrible, but they may have come across a fake product and have drawn the appropriate conclusion.

Whiskey prices vary from country to country. Consider the cost of Clan MacGregor whiskey (0.7). The price for one bottle in Europe starts from 15 euros and reaches 20, in the USA - from 15 to 20 dollars, and in Russia it averages 1200 rubles.

How to drink

In the homeland of whiskey, it is traditionally customary to drink the drink according to the “five S” rule:

  • Sight. Appreciate all the beauty and shades of flowers, warming a glass of drink in your palms for a few minutes.
  • Smell. Calmly and measuredly feel the whole palette and shades of adhesive tape, slowly inhaling its aroma.
  • Swish. Take a small sip and feel the sweet yet warm taste of the blend.
  • Swallow. Take a full sip and appreciate how the taste could open up even brighter.
  • splash. The so-called "splash" allows you to change the taste of the drink by adding coca-cola, soda or ice to it. Add a few ice cubes to the scotch and the whiskey will seem even softer and richer.

Blended whiskey Clan MacGregor is also an excellent basis for more than a hundred recipes for low-alcohol cocktails. The drink is suitable as an aperitif and digestif and will look worthy in the home bar of an amateur or collector.

What to eat

In order to fully taste all the delights of this drink, you need to know how to eat whiskey. Of course, there will always be some connoisseurs who prefer to drink whiskey without snacks exclusively in its pure form, at least diluted.

However, the majority of fans of the legendary alcohol are not so ascetic, especially since whiskey is an excellent aperitif, digestif, and can also be consumed throughout the evening.

As accepted in the world

Food that pairs wonderfully with good whiskey is a long list. It is curious that the tastes of connoisseurs of the drink vary depending on the habitat.

Certain traditions in terms of snacks have developed in the homeland of whiskey - in Ireland. Gradually, unique preferences appeared among the inhabitants of Japan, France, Germany, Italy, the USA, and Canada.

The Scots, for the most part, drink traditional alcohol after dinner, lowering the fortress with water or ice, therefore they do not need snacks.

  1. Soft Irish whiskeys are best paired with smoked salmon.
  2. The Japanese prefer to eat whiskey made from rice grains with traditional sushi.
  3. In French restaurants, you will be offered to serve seafood (oysters, scallops) for a snack.
  4. German admirers cannot imagine drinking whiskey without smoked sausages and meat snacks.
  5. Italians recommend cooking lasagna as the best choice of food for whiskey.
  6. The most interesting approach to serving whiskey is shown by Americans and Canadians: they always have sweets on the table, for example, fruits, chocolate, pudding, muffins. Snacks like these really enhance the aftertaste of an oil-infused bourbon.
  7. Our compatriots also have rich experience in drinking elite whiskey, even unique addictions have appeared. Whiskey perfectly complements game, beef tongue, meat with mushroom sauce, black olives, grapes.

Inappropriate Snacks

  • cheese;
  • spices
  • other products with their own rich taste.

Remember! Poorly selected food changes the taste of the drink, interrupts it.

As a last resort, if you really want to experiment, pick up unsalted cheeses. Otherwise, the rich shades of taste and aroma of the drink will remain inaccessible.

What is served with whiskey of different varieties

  1. Light salads, fruits, pastries, fish on skewers, mini-kebabs are most suitable for single malts.
  2. Buttery bourbon goes great with nuts and meat dishes.
  3. A well-aged whiskey with subtle fruity undertones goes well with a grilled menu, especially chicken.

At first glance it may seem that self-sufficient whiskey and delicious gourmet food are incompatible, but experts say the opposite is true. Under well-cooked and beautifully decorated food, you can introduce new adherents to their number of your friends and acquaintances with scotch tape.

Tartlets and sandwiches are the most common and acceptable snack format, if you approach them wisely.

Atmosphere

  • Create a slight twilight in the room. If the tasting is scheduled for the daytime, then close the curtains and turn on the table lamp.
  • Turn off all noisy appliances such as TV, radio and so on. Set the guests in a relaxing mood by turning on unobtrusive light music, preferably classical, quietly.
  • The appearance of guests should be informal, but no frills in the form of shorts or crop tops. For men, jeans and a jacket are perfect, and for women - a light, beautiful, but not "home" dress.

  • During the tasting it's best to have casual conversations, which do not cause long discussions. Think over the topics in advance so that the invitees can relax and forget about all the everyday hardships.
  • Think carefully about the list of snacks and drinks to satisfy absolutely all the tastes of the audience.

Temperature

Your main task is to help others reveal the whole bouquet of aroma and taste of noble alcohol. For this, the temperature of the heating should not be below 18 degrees and above 21 degrees. Take this very seriously, as colder whiskey will destroy all flavors, while warmer whiskey can cause you to get drunk quickly.

What to serve

It is very important to decide in which whiskey glasses you will serve noble spirits. I offer two options for you to choose from.

  • If you are going to conduct a full tasting and evaluation of the Clan MacGregor strong drink, then pour the strong drink exclusively in tulip-shaped glasses- they are created in order to appreciate the aromatic and taste qualities of alcoholic beverages.

  • If you just want to enjoy your favorite alcohol, sipping it lightly during a friendly conversation or after a meal, then choose a toggle switch- a low and wide glass with a rather thick bottom. Most often, a few ice cubes or drops of cold melt water are added to it.

Tasting process

  1. Sight. Pour McGregor into a glass only a third, and preferably a quarter. We enjoy the play of light behind the transparent walls of the vessel and consider the bright and rich color shades of the drink. Then we clasp the glass with our palms and warm the contents of the glass for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Smell. In order to get a complete picture of McGregor and feel the whole range of his aroma, slowly inhale the smell of the contents of the glass, bringing it at a distance of 7-10 cm to the nose. Professional tasters say that this method will make it easy to identify each of the vegetable, oil or essential tones.
  3. Swish. Next, you need to slowly sip the hot drink. In no case do not immediately swallow, feel the slightly astringent, sweetish, warming taste of alcohol with the receptors of the tongue.
  4. Swallow. We take a small sip and enjoy the delicate and mild taste of Clan MacGregor scotch.
  5. Splash. This is the final stage of the ritual, which in translation into Russian means "splash". Add a few ice cubes to a whiskey glass or, focusing on the individual preferences of the audience, dilute the scotch with soda or Coca-Cola.

What to drink Clan MacGregor

Clan MacGregor best served after an evening meal(as a digestif).

  • To reduce the strength of the drink, add 2-3 ice cubes to the glass.
  • Also, a few drops of melted cold water will not spoil the taste of scotch.
  • Mild floral flavor Pairs well with strong black tea or freshly brewed coffee. providing a warming and relaxing effect.
  • In addition, you can dilute strong contents with soda, Coca-Cola, natural juices. Your choice depends on your own preferences.

  • Those who prefer to snack on alcohol can try fresh citrus fruits or apples and pears.
  • No less interesting taste is obtained in combination with dried sausage or heavily fried pieces of pork, beef.
  • Some consumers likes to eat MacGregor seafood, but this option is strictly for an amateur.
  • The softness and smooth taste of this spirit allow it to be used as the main component in the manufacture of cocktails. McGregor pairs wonderfully with a variety of ingredients and will help create a new kind of cocktail.

History of whiskey "Clan MacGregor"

First of all, it is worth noting that the recently widely advertised whiskey of Conor McGregor has nothing to do with the type of alcohol under discussion. Whiskey Clan Macgregor appreciated not only for its reasonable price, but also for its amazing, highest quality, special softness, as well as a noble bouquet and rich taste of this alcohol. And this is not surprising, since the descendants of the famous William Grant, who today are the leading producers of the world's famous brands of Scottish alcohol, "had a hand" in its creation.

Whiskey received its loud name in honor of the great MacGregor family. In the distant VIII century, the ancestors of this dynasty ruled Scotland, and they always managed to unite and stand against any adversity. They are distinguished by dignity, militancy and nobility. All these qualities can be fully attributed to the alcohol of the same name.

With the permission of the heads of this dynasty, in addition to the name of the great family, each bottle has a family coat of arms. Its presence testifies to the confirmation of the special significance and high quality of the goods produced.

If you have just decided to plunge into the interesting world of knowledge of such a drink as whiskey, then I advise you to start with blended Clan MacGregor - this is an excellent choice for new beginnings! Share your conclusions after tasting in the comments - I'm very interested to hear them. Thank you for your attention and successful tasting!

In the world. Whiskey Clan MacGregor is well known not only in Russia, but throughout the world, and not least because the cost of this whiskey is low. Whiskey Clan MacGregor is a blended economy class whiskey, costing less than a thousand rubles a bottle and aging for only three years.

Whiskey is produced by William Grant & Son, a family-owned company founded in 1887. About 15 different grain and malt spirits are used to produce Clan MacGregor whiskey. Whiskey got its name in honor of the oldest Scottish family - MacGregors, whiskey is produced with their permission and with their coat of arms on the label. The most famous member of the clan is actor Edward McGregor.

Whiskey tasting notes Clan MacGregor Clan MacGregor

You should not expect something supernatural from whiskey for 1000 rubles. The smell is alcoholic, rough, it smells of acetone and some kind of chemistry. There are some floral notes, but they are almost indistinguishable. Very strong fusel flavor. To taste - too much malt, too much alcohol, which is nothing hidden. Clan MacGregor has no aftertaste; he has a fuse.

It's amazing how using 15 alcohols managed to create such a muck. Whiskey is well suited for lubricating the skin before injection, decontaminating objects, and as fuel for a burner. Perhaps the worst whiskey that the blog author managed to taste in his entire life.

Cost of Clan MacGregor whiskey

History of Clan MacGregor Whiskey

Clan MacGregor is produced by William Gordon & Sons, which, apparently, wanted to make whiskey as affordable as possible for the widest segment of the population, however, quality does not come cheap. The result is a drink that only bears the name of whiskey, but is actually mixed spirits that have lain in a barrel for several years.

Whiskey has no history. As well as taste.

If the cinema forced me to write the first essay from the history of the clans about the clan, then literature, namely the novels of Walter Scott, is about the MacGregor clan.

Clan MacGregor is a fairly important clan in the Scottish Highlands. The clan's ancestral lands is the Dalmally region in the very center of Orgailo. The clan traces its lineage from the legendary clan, and the representative of this clan first conquered the Picts in 843 and created Scotland, becoming its king! The reign lasted almost 200 years, until the representative of the MacAlpin clan, King Malcolm II, died without leaving behind three daughters! But, despite the loss of the crown, the blood of the Macalpins somehow flows in all the monarchs of Britain, including Elizabeth II. Not only MacGregors are descended from the MacAlpin clan, but also Macaulays, Mackinons, Macfies, Macnabs and Macquaries. However, the first and closest, eldest descendants are still the MacGregors. This explains their arrogant motto "We are of the royal family" and defiant behavior! No clan has earned such a reputation or been so persecuted for cruelty, looting and barbarism.

In the 13th century, this clan was very strong and reigned supreme in the very center of the highlands, but in the 15th century its strength began to weaken. It is clear that the clan was not particularly guilty of this, it is clear that they tried to deprive the most noble clan of influence at court, and it is clear that for this they tried in every possible way to strengthen the clan living in the neighborhood - the clan. That is why the Campbells developed faster and proved to be stronger. The conflict was inevitable. The irreconcilable enmity of the two clans went down in history. A special romanticism of the situation is given by the fact that the head of the MacGregor clan fell in love with the girl Marion from the Campbell clan and went on the run with her. But soon the warriors of the Campbell clan overtook them and, in front of the pregnant Marion, killed her lover! This story is very similar to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The enmity lasted for almost a century, and its apotheosis was the battle of the MacGregor clan provoked by the Campbell clan with the clan. The Colcahoons prevented the treacherous Campbells from ruling Orgailo undividedly. The MacGregors defeated the Kolkahoons, although there were almost three times as many of them. However, the battle turned into a bloody massacre, which angered King James VI of Scotland, who banned the very name MacGregor! The leader of the clan and 30 of the best warriors were immediately executed, and their wives were doomed to shame and starvation. This is written in the work "The Legend of Montrose". From the moment of the royal decree, anyone who dared to call himself MacGregor was waiting for death. The Campbells in their ancestral castle Filarik, the ruins of which can still be seen, became an arena for bloodshed - next to the castle, the MacGregors were executed and their heads were put in a special pit. The Campbells managed to become the largest landowners in Scotland, and the MacGregors stood below the line for 170 years. "Children of the Mist" - this is how the representatives of the clan with proud royal blood were called due to the fact that they were doomed to banditry!

But there was a man who changed everything - his name was Rob Roy McGregor. A legend already in his lifetime, a folk hero! Initially, he was engaged in the cattle trade under the name Campbell and amassed a fair amount. It is clear that he was engaged in cattle stealing, which before the adoption of a special union was not a crime in Scotland. Cattle could not be put anywhere (the union just allowed the sale of cattle to England), there were no costs for its maintenance and it was simply driven from place to place. Interestingly, the very word Blackmail (blackmail) - extortion, originally meant a payment for the protection of livestock. Actually, this is the same “roof” known to us from the activities of Putin and his cronies. Perhaps that is why the judge listened so calmly to these terms in the trials of Berezovsky and Abramovich. In essence, modern Russia is very similar to Scotland in the 16th century. However, soon Rob Roy McGregor went bankrupt and, taking the money of clients, fled to the mountains. It was this period of his life that became the basis for the novel of the same name by Walter Scott! Who didn't read Walter Scott's Rob Roy as a child? Rob Roy's life was ideal for the romantic storytelling of Walter Scott, who wished to preserve the history of Scotland. It is clear that Walter Scott romanticized Rob Roy McGregor, he was a fair swindler, but the novel does not become less beautiful from this! True, there is evidence that Rob Roy MacGregor passed information to the British Government about the plans of the Jacobites. This allowed him to earn forgiveness for himself and the clan. At the beginning of the 18th century, the decree on the liquidation of the clan was canceled, but this no longer mattered for its preservation, because the clan system was liquidated in 1748, i.e. about 50 years earlier. Rob Roy McGregor died in action and wearing a tartan, his gravestone reads "McGregor no matter what." Countless MacGregors died as a result of persecution, the history of this clan is perhaps the most tragic history of the Scottish highlands.

Clan Gregor or MacGregor

GREGOR or MACGREGOR

Clann Ghriogair

(Na Griogaraich)

Badge and Coat of Arms (McGregor from McGregor)

Motto:

"S rioghal mo dhream (Gaelic) - "I am a royal family" (Royal is my race)

The motto, as well as the Gaelic title of the leaders " An t-Ailpeineach", the MacGregors emphasize their legendary descent from the MacAlpin royal dynasty.

Battle cry:

Ard Choille! (Gaelic) - "Forest top!"(The woody height)

The words come from the name of the possession of Ardchoill (Ardchoill, now - Ardchyle) in Perthshire and are associated with the name of Duncan Ladasah MacGregor of Ardhoil ( Duncan Ladasach MacGregor of Ardchoill, ?-1552) - one of the leaders of the clan in the first half of the 16th century and a well-known Scottish robber in his time. The cry was first mentioned in 1544 during the lifetime of Duncan himself (who was the chieftain and mentor of the leader) and has since been adopted by most of the clan, but some MacGregors are believed to still use a different cry: " bad Guibhas", - which translates from Gaelic as " Spruce thickets"(Clump of Firs) and is found on the coat of arms of the MacGregors from Pont's Manuscript(1624) .

The life of Duncan Ladasach of Ardhoil, who became the archetype of the Scottish "noble robber" long before the famous Rob Roy, is described in the Scottish medieval poem " Testament of Duncan Ladasakh" ("Testament of Duncan Ladasach", or " Duncan Laideus" alias Makgregouris Testament") contained in "The Black Book of Teymouth" (The Black Book of Taymouth, by William Bowie, 1598, with additions to 1648). In 1552, the Campbells of Glenorchy executed Duncan and his two sons (for murder) and appropriated his possessions.

Today's clan chiefs, the MacGregors of Lanric, are direct descendants of Duncan Ladasach.*

Origin of the MacGregor clan.

The MacGregors are the oldest clan from " descendants of Alpin" (Siol Alpin), to which also belong the Macnabs, Grants, Macaulays, MacKinnons, Macquarries and Macfie, and is said to be descended from a younger brother or son of the first king of Scotland, Kenneth I MacAlpin (r.: 843-852). Hence the royal motto of the MacGregor chiefs: "S rioghal mo dhream" ("I am royal"), and their Gaelic title is An t-Ailpeanach, that is " The Alpine"- the leader of the Alpin clan. However, the Gregor clan begins its real history several centuries later than those ancient and semi-legendary times - at the end of the 14th century, when the patronymic surname first appeared MacGregor - Gaelic. mac ghriogair - "son of Gregor" (son of Gregor).

Traditional bloodlines: Chief Gregor or Prince Gregor.

1). According to "Manuscript of 1467" (MS 1467) , where the oldest genealogies of the mountain clans are recorded, the MacGregors are descended from the king of Dal Riada, Ferhar Fada ( Ferchar Fada, or Ferchar the Tall, King of Dal Riata; ?-697), and received their patronymic surname in honor of the leader Gregor, who lived around the 14th century. It is noteworthy that Ferhar Fada belonged to " to the genus Lorna" (Cenel Loairn), and the Macalpins are very distantly related to him, since they come from another branch of the kings of Dal Riada - from " genus Gabran" (Cenel nGabráin).

Clan Gregor genealogy according to MS 1467:

"Malcolm [?], son of Patrick , son of John , son of Gregory , son of Duncan, son of Malcolm, son of Gillchrist, son of Ferchard, son of Murdoch, son of Annreas, son of Cormac, son of Airbertaich, son of Ferchar, son of Ferchar fada, son of Feradach finn".

"Manuscript of 1467" indicates a common ancient Celtic origin of the MacGregor clans ( cloinn Grigair), McKinnon ( mhic Fhinnguine), Macquarry ( cloinn Guaire) and McPhee ( mhic Duibshithi), but does not connect them in any way with the MacAlpin family. The clans Grant, Macaulay and Macnab are not mentioned at all in the manuscript.

2). The next important source is "Lismore Abbot's Book" (Book of the Dean of Lismore; by James MacGregor, Vicar of Fortingall and Dean of Lismore; c.1512-1542, with additions to 1579). This manuscript is a collection of medieval Scottish poetry compiled in the first half of the 16th century by James MacGregor (?-1551), curate of Fortingall and rector of Lismore, and supplemented by other scribes, including the vicar's brother Duncan MacGregor and assistant William Drummond. In addition to the poems of the Ulster and Fenian cycle and poems by Scottish authors of the XIV-XVI centuries in " book"A number of interesting historical or near-historical works and writings are presented: a list of the kings of Scotland, "Chronicle of Fortingall" and three old MacGregor pedigrees. One of the genealogies compiled around 1519 in verse form in Gaelic by the bard " Duncan son of Dougall Maul" (Duncan mac Dougall Maoil), for the first time elevates the leaders of the MacGregors to descent from the royal family of the MacAlpins, namely from " Aoda or Hugh of Orkha" (Aoidh Urchaidh, or Hugh of Urchy), said to be the son of King Kenneth I MacAlpin of Scotland.

Clan Gregor genealogy (by Duncan mac Dougall Maoil) according the Book of the Dean of Lismore:

"John [6th Chief, ?-1519], son of Patrick [5th Chief], son of Malcolm [4th Chief], son of Black John [3rd Chief], son of John [2nd Chief], son of Gregory [1st chief, XIV c.], son of John, son of Malcolm, son of Duncan, son of Duncan, son of Gillelan, son of Hugh of Urchy, son of King Kenneth, son of King Alpin".

Contained in the same manuscript "Chronicle of Fortingall" (Chronicle of Fortingall, c.1531-1579) covers the events of the history of Scotland (briefly) and the MacGregor clan from 1092 to 1579. The chronicle, originally written in Latin and partly Scotch, begins with the death of King Malcolm III, but the first MacGregor mentioned in it is John MacGregor of Glenorchy (the second chief of the clan), who died on April 19, 1390. The document is a valuable source on the early history of the MacGregor clan with a list of dates of major events and deaths of the leaders and leaders of the clan in the 15th-16th centuries.

Exactly on "Chronicle of Fortingall" and pedigrees from "Lismore Abbot Books" the traditional list of leaders of the MacGregor clan of the XIV-XVI centuries is based and the first of them, that is, the founder of the clan, is again Gregor, who lived somewhere in the middle of the XIV century.

3). Finally, in "Baronies of Scotland" Sir Robert Douglas of Glenbervie ("The Baronage of Scotland", by Sir Robert Douglas of Glenbervie, 1798) a version is given about the origin of the MacGregors directly from Prince Gregor, allegedly the third son of King Alpin.

Clan Gregor genealogy according to the "The Baronage of Scotland" (1798):

"[...] Alexander MacGregor of that Ilk [11th Chief, ?-1604], son of James, Laird of MaGregor, son of Malcolm MacGregor, son of John MacGregor of that Ilk, son of Gregor Aulin, son of Malcolm Macgregor, son of Gregor, Lord of Macgregor, son of William, Lord Macgregor, son of Malcolm MacGregor of Glenurchy, son of John MacGregor of Glenurchy, son of Gregor Garbh, son of Eoin Mor na Bratich, son of Gregor na Bratich, son of Constantine, son of Dongallus, son of Prince George , third son of King Alpin".

It is worth noting that, in general, the names and dates of the life of the early MacGregors from " Baronies"Douglas are not very reliable and do not coincide with any "Chronicle of Fortingall" , nor with other genealogies and earlier sources. In particular, there is an almost complete discrepancy in the names between the traditional pedigree ( see 2.) and the genealogy of Douglas's authorship until the 15th century and beyond, there are discrepancies up to the beginning of the 17th century. Some variants of this later version, or legend that became widespread in the 19th century, identify "Prince Gregor" with King Hyric (r.: 878-889) or " Gregor the Great" (Gregory the Great), as it is called in one of the translations "Chronicle of the Kings of Alba" (Chronicle of the Kings of Alba; XI c.).

McGregors.First Traditional Chief and probably real eponymous ancestor clan MacGregor - this is Gregor " golden harness" (Gregor of the Golden Bridles), who lived in the XIV century and whose son was the second leader of the clan - Ian " one-eyed"or John Macgregor of Glenorchy ( Iain Cam, or Ian of the One Eye, or John MacGregor of Glenorchy, ?-1390), from which all other chiefs and branches of a large family descend: the MacGregors of Glenstrae, the MacGregors of Roro, the MacGregors of Brackley, the House of Ladasach and their descendants MacGregors of Lanrick, "Clan Dugall Ciar" and MacGregors of Glengyle, and others.

The McNabs, Grants, Macaulays, MacKinnons, Macquarries and Macfies were considered relatives of the MacGregors - clans, subsequently united by the common name " descendants of Alpin" (Siol Alpine). This tradition was formed gradually during the XV-XVII centuries. In addition, the frontier Grierson family of Lag claims to be descended from the MacGregors.
