Cappuccino and mochaccino: the same espresso, milk, milk foam - but what is the difference? Coffee Mochaccino - a combination of creamy and chocolate notes

The USA is considered the birthplace of mochaccino. It is among Americans that this coffee cocktail is especially popular. In our country it is served in coffee shops and cafes. But it’s quite possible to make mochaccino coffee yourself. The main thing is to find the best recipe.

Unlike the usual latte, mochaccino contains whipped cream and chocolate, and you can use either regular or white. Varieties that contain nuts or some other flavoring additives are often used.

Such ingredients give the drink a unique taste and aroma. But it is worth considering that the more chocolate is present in it, the higher its calorie content will be. Therefore, it is not recommended to abuse it.

As a decoration, just like for a latte, you can use chocolate chips or cinnamon. Sometimes mochaccino is served with small marshmallows, which are hung on the edge of the glass.

Traditional recipe

A traditional recipe will allow you to prepare mochaccino coffee with a classic taste. For it you will need:

  • natural coffe;
  • high fat whole milk;
  • chocolate;
  • whipped cream.

First of all, you need to brew a strong enough espresso. Then melt the chocolate and whip the cream. Warm the milk slightly. A tall glass made of thick glass is suitable for such a cocktail. Melted chocolate is first carefully poured into it.

The next layer is poured milk. Only then can you add espresso. The very last layer is a top of whipped cream. If you want to make the cocktail more festive, you can decorate it with cinnamon or cocoa powder.

With added ice cream

If you want the drink to have a creamier taste, then it is better to use the following recipe. Components:

  • 100 ml of ready-made espresso;
  • 50 grams of vanilla flavored ice cream;
  • 120 ml fat milk;
  • 30 ml melted chocolate.

Place ice cream in the bottom of a tall, thick glass. Top it with chocolate, previously mixed with milk. The last layer is espresso.

Note: Mochaccino is traditionally served in glass glasses or tumblers. The components of the drink are added sequentially and, if executed perfectly, its layering will be visible in the container. If the recipe requires mixing the ingredients, the drink can be served in regular cups.

With ice

For hot summer days, a cold mochaccino recipe is more suitable. Its creamy taste will give you a feeling of long-awaited coolness and tenderness. Stock up on ingredients:

  • freshly brewed espresso;
  • 100 ml milk. If desired, it can be replaced with condensed;
  • 50 ml chocolate syrup.

First, prepare 100 ml of strong espresso. Mix it with syrup. Whip the milk into foam. Place ice cubes in a glass and prepared milk foam on top. Then carefully pour in the coffee-chocolate mixture. Try to pour it along the wall.

Cold with cherries

In the hot summer, gourmets will appreciate a drink made from the following ingredients:

  • freshly brewed espresso;
  • 60 g chocolate ice cream;
  • 2-3 canned cherries;
  • cream.

Place ice cream in a cup and pour freshly prepared coffee. Decorate with cream to taste and cherries.

With added cocoa

This recipe will allow you to prepare a cocktail with a bright taste and delicate aroma. You will need:

  • black coffee;
  • milk;
  • cocoa;
  • sugar;
  • chocolate.

Brew the required amount of black coffee in the usual way and pour into a glass. Grate the chocolate, dilute it in warm milk, and add it to the glass on top. All that remains is to mix sugar with cocoa and sprinkle this mixture on the finished cocktail. This combination of products will give the drink an unforgettable taste. Perhaps it will somehow remind you of the taste of a chocolate latte.

With added cinnamon and nutmeg

If you can no longer surprise your guests with the usual, then it’s worth making an original mochaccino. This method may seem complicated at first glance. But it can be done at home. For this you will need:

  • ground coffee;
  • half a glass of full-fat milk;
  • vanillin;
  • one cinnamon stick;
  • 50 grams of whipped cream;
  • bitter dark chocolate;
  • nutmeg.

Heat the milk in a saucepan. Dissolve vanillin in it and wait until the mixture boils. Place the chocolate, broken into pieces, into the boiling liquid. Stir constantly until it is completely melted.

Brew coffee using your usual method. Mix it with milk. You can add sugar.

Pour the chocolate and milk mixture into a cup of coffee. Whisk all ingredients thoroughly. This cocktail should be poured into tall glass glasses. You can put a cinnamon stick on top. Add a top of whipped cream. Lightly sprinkle the drink with nutmeg.

Coffee mochaccino is a sweet, aromatic cocktail based on milk, coffee and hot chocolate. Cooking recipes differ depending on the traditions of the country where it is prepared. The number of ingredients varies as well as the composition. The most popular are the American and European versions of the dessert drink.

In the states, the drink appeared thanks to particularly demanding visitors to bars and cafes who were not ready to drink too strong espresso. It was with their light hand that bartenders began adding whipped cream, milk and chocolate to the drink. The prototype cocktails of the modern mochaccino were decorated with chocolate chips and syrups. The Americans gave the name to the drink - mocha.

The question of how cappuccino differs from mochaccino is simple to answer - the absence of cocoa powder or chocolate in the first place. Cappuccino is an Italian cocktail consisting of coffee, milk and milk foam, served in a warm porcelain cup, mainly at breakfast. Mochaccino is two-thirds espresso, the rest is milk and chocolate, cocoa, cream and additional components according to the recipe.

Serving - subtleties for those initiated into the mystery of coffee art

Mochaccino coffee is served exclusively in tall glass glasses with a handle for cocktails. In some countries they are replaced with tall ceramic cups. The more layers are added, the more justified it becomes to use clear glassware to demonstrate latte art.

Simple versions of cocktails without designer tricks can be served in cups, but always with a dessert spoon, as required by etiquette. It is customary to offer marshmallows or unleavened cookies as a treat with a drink.

Cooking classic - basic recipe

To prepare mochaccino in the traditional version, you will need the following products:

  • hot dark chocolate - 50 ml (can be melted in a water bath);
  • ground espresso coffee (7-10 g);
  • whipped cream - 50 ml;
  • chilled milk - 40-60 ml;
  • grated chocolate for decoration.

The preparation process begins by brewing espresso coffee in a cezve. Melted chocolate is poured into the glass prepared for serving, diluted with chilled milk so that picturesque lines are obtained, using a bar spoon. When finished with latte art, pour coffee into the mixture and decorate the cocktail with whipped cream and chocolate chips.

If so, mochaccino coffee is the drink for you. In its classic version, in addition to the usual rich taste of Arabica and milk, you will feel the soft taste of chocolate or chocolate syrup. And chocolate, as you know, is a great mood lifter, promoting the production of the joy hormone. Brew it at home yourself and enjoy this healthy invigorating drink.

What is mochaccino and history of origin

Mochaccino coffee is a delicate creamy chocolate dessert drink with an exquisite taste and chocolate-coffee aroma. You can find out what it is only by trying the unusual layered cocktail. Some call it a “ladies' drink,” while others consider it a dessert for those with a sweet tooth, but real coffee connoisseurs know: the delicate taste of natural Arabica, mixed with notes of real chocolate and soft thick cream, is an amazing combination that will delight any gourmet.

There are two types of cocktail:

  • American mocha.
  • European mochaccino.

We owe the appearance of this drink to the Americans, or, more precisely, to the capricious clientele of American bars and coffee shops of the second half of the last century. Many visitors did not like the bitter taste of espresso, but they appreciated the invigorating and refreshing effect that appeared after each serving.

North Americans of the time were fast-moving, business-minded people who grasped the opportunity to easily increase their productivity and recharge their batteries during their lunch break. Therefore, they did everything possible to make their favorite drink more suitable for their tastes.

This is exactly the task that fell on the shoulders of American baristas - and they coped with it excellently. First, they began to add chocolate chips to espresso, using other sweeteners and milk and cream to soften the taste. And then they just started adding chocolate syrup to the coffee.

The public liked the taste of the drink so much that the recipe instantly spread throughout America. This happened so quickly that the names of the first baristas who decided to experiment did not remain in history.

Important! The traditional American name for the cocktail, Mocha, was named after the Yemeni Arabica variety, Mocha.

Like all new products, mochaccino coffee quickly crossed the ocean and became very popular in Europe. It should be noted that not only the recipe was changed, but also the name of the classic American cocktail. If in the original the residents of the States called it exclusively “Mocha” - in honor of the type of coffee from which it was prepared according to the classic recipe, then in Europe this name was never used so as not to create confusion with the coffee variety of the same name.

On a note! The name “Mokachino” was invented by the Italians; previously in Europe this drink was called nothing more than “Chocolate latte”.

Mochaccino came to Russia from Europe, since our country has been actively adopting the European coffee tradition over the past decades. Therefore, we immediately got used to the name “Mokachino” and the recipe, which in fact is not classic for this drink.

Traditional American mocha

Making mochaccino coffee according to a traditional American recipe is not difficult. The original mocha is made from espresso, always from Mocha beans. For its preparation, only chocolate syrup is used, without replacing it with other analogues. In addition, the drink is decorated with whipped cream.

Important! The classic recipe used syrup, not chocolate or cocoa.

Classic European mochaccino

Mochaccino according to the European recipe is a more refined and varied drink, numbering several dozen interesting varieties. Europeans are generally more inclined to experiment, thereby introducing a pleasant inconsistency into the coffee tradition.

Ingredients for European mochaccino may vary. The standard set is as follows:

  • Strong coffee - not only Arabica, but also any other varieties.
  • Milk - in the European version, or “Chocolate Latte”, as it was called, there is almost twice as much as in the traditional American one. Europeans love softer coffee drinks.
  • Chocolate syrup, or melted chocolate, or even cocoa - there are no restrictions on this matter.
  • Whipped cream.
  • Decorations - cinnamon, grated chocolate or nuts, caramel.

On a note! It was from the Europeans that we adopted their love for various mochaccinos; today in Russian coffee shops you can try a dozen unusual varieties of this cocktail.

Cappuccino, mochaccino and latte: what's the difference?

Many people love coffee, but do not delve into the specifics of coffee-based cocktails at all, and do not see the difference between them. But it exists, and often plays an important role. So it is with mochaccino coffee - how does it differ from other popular cocktails.

It should be noted that this drink is closest in composition to cappuccino and latte:

  • Mochaccino coffee differs from cappuccino in that almost twice as much milk is added to it, as well as chocolate or chocolate syrup. It is also decorated with whipped cream, which is not usually done with cappuccino; in rare cases, its surface is covered only with bulk additives: cinnamon, nuts or chocolate chips. Otherwise, these drinks are similar.
  • As for latte, mochaccino differs from it much less than the same cappuccino from latte. It's all about the proportions in which milk is added to the base portion of coffee: there is much more of it in a latte than in a cappuccino. And in mochaccino - about the same. The difference between a latte and a mochaccino is the presence of chocolate. It’s not for nothing that at first it was called “Chocolate Latte.”

On a note! The traditional American Mocha is more similar to the cappuccino we are used to - it also contains less milk. But the European recipe clearly resembles a latte.

How to prepare hot chocolate for mochaccino?

There is nothing better than brewing a real mochaccino yourself! Especially if you use not chocolate syrup or cocoa for it, but real hot chocolate, brewed with your own hands. It will give the finished cocktail a deeper chocolate taste, rich in flavor shades and nuances, and the aroma of such a cocktail will acquire more varied notes.

Making hot chocolate is quite simple. For this you will need:

  • Milk - 100 milliliters (this is half a faceted glass).
  • Chocolate - 50 grams (this is about half a standard chocolate bar).
  • Cream - 50 milliliters.
  • Cinnamon - a couple of pinches for taste.

The milk is slightly heated to a boil and cinnamon is added to it, after which it is left to cool. Chocolate is melted: for this they use both a microwave oven and a water bath; we recommend the latter option. Melted chocolate is mixed with cream, and then poured into milk and mixed thoroughly.
