After the collapse of the USSR, the new government stopped the fight against moonshine. Criminal liability and fines were abolished, and the article banning the production of alcohol-containing products at home was removed from the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. To this day, there is not a single law that prohibits you and me from engaging in our favorite hobby - preparing alcohol at home. This is evidenced by the Federal Law of July 8, 1999 No. 143-FZ “On the administrative liability of legal entities (organizations) and individual entrepreneurs for offenses in the field of production and circulation of ethyl alcohol, alcoholic and alcohol-containing products” (Collected Legislation of the Russian Federation, 1999, No. 28 , art. 3476).

Extract from the Federal Law of the Russian Federation:

“The effect of this Federal Law does not apply to the activities of citizens (individuals) producing products containing ethyl alcohol for purposes other than sale.”

Moonshining in other countries:

In Kazakhstan in accordance with the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Administrative Offenses dated January 30, 2001 N 155, the following liability is provided. Thus, according to Article 335 “Manufacture and sale of home-made alcoholic beverages”, illegal production of moonshine, chacha, mulberry vodka, mash and other alcoholic beverages for the purpose of sale, as well as the sale of these alcoholic beverages, entails a fine in the amount of thirty monthly calculation indices with confiscation of alcoholic beverages , apparatus, raw materials and equipment for their manufacture, as well as money and other valuables received from their sale. However, the law does not prohibit the preparation of alcohol for personal use.

In Ukraine and Belarus things are different. Articles No. 176 and No. 177 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses provide for the imposition of fines in the amount of three to ten tax-free minimum wages for the production and storage of moonshine without the purpose of sale, for the storage of devices* for its production without the purpose of sale.

Article 12.43 repeats this information almost word for word. “Production or acquisition of strong alcoholic beverages (moonshine), semi-finished products for their production (mash), storage of apparatus for their production” in the Code of the Republic of Belarus on Administrative Offenses. Clause No. 1 states: “The production by individuals of strong alcoholic drinks (moonshine), semi-finished products for their production (mash), as well as the storage of devices* used for their production, will entail a warning or a fine of up to five basic units with confiscation of the specified drinks, semi-finished products and devices."

*You can still purchase moonshine stills for home use, since their second purpose is to distill water and obtain components for natural cosmetics and perfumes.

To open, I use a corkscrew with 5 turns, which is screwed into the center of the cork by 4 turns and carefully removed. After this, you must wipe the neck so that crumbs from the cork do not get inside. If this does happen, a little liquid is drained, getting rid of them. Place the bottle in the basket with the label facing up to allow guests to examine it.

The glasses are pre-wiped so that nothing interferes with assessing the color of the drink. Pour it, holding the bottle at a height of 15-25 cm from the bottom of the glass. This will allow the alcohol to be enriched with oxygen and soften the tannin astringency, which is especially important for dry red varieties. A bottle of white wine is poured after being wrapped in a towel so that the drink does not heat up from your hands.

The degree of filling of glasses depends on the selected variety. Fill the bowl half or a third with dry white wine to prevent it from heating up, red - 2/3, sweet - 1/2, 1/3, Madeira - 2/3. Liqueur wine (port, malaga, malvasia and others) is poured, filling the glass only halfway.

Having filled the wine glass, turn the bottle so that there are no drips. After all the glasses are filled, the neck is wiped with a towel again.

Temperature and serving rules

The bouquet and taste of alcohol are greatly influenced by the temperature at which it is served. This especially applies to how to drink white wine correctly. Elite varieties aged in oak are cooled to +13...+15ºС, ordinary dry drinks - to +8...+12ºС, semi-sweet drinks - to +6...+8ºС. The finer the taste, the higher the serving temperature is allowed. Rose varieties are cooled to +11...+13ºС, dessert varieties - to +8...+12ºС, ice varieties - to +11ºС, Rieslings - to +9...+12ºС.

The serving temperature for red wines depends on their age. Young drinks are cooled to +12…+15ºС, and aged ones - to +15…+17ºС. Red “Bordeaux” varieties can be served warmer (+18…+19ºС). Liqueur and fortified wines are cooled to +10…+12ºС.

Serving rules largely depend on the type and age of the wine. Elite aged drinks are served in the same position in which they are stored - at an angle, in special baskets or on a stand, so as not to disturb the sediment. Bottles are not wiped clean of dust; this is indirect evidence of long exposure. Liquor brands are stored and served in an upright position.

The drink is served to the table in a bottle and poured in front of guests. The ladies' glasses are filled first. The owner pours himself last. If several varieties are served at the table, you should first allow guests to try them all and make their own choice, pouring only a few sips for tasting.

What to drink wine from

In order to fully appreciate the color, taste and bouquet of wine, the choice of glass is important. It is best to give preference to glass or crystal transparent wine glasses with a high stem. You need to hold the glass by it so that the wine does not get warm in your hands. The clarity of the bowl is important for assessing the color of the drink.

For red varieties, choose voluminous wine glasses such as “Bordeaux” or “Burgundy”. Bordeaux type glasses have a tulip-shaped bowl, with a base wider than the top, with a volume of 0.6 ml or more. This shape of the container primarily ensures contact of the drink with the tip of the tongue, where the receptors that recognize sweet taste are located. The bowl of a Burgundy glass has a volume of 0.7-0.75 ml and is more spherical in shape. It is suitable for red varieties with pronounced acidity and moderate tannin. White wines of the Grand Cru type, aged in oak barrels, with a complex taste or drinks with weak acidity are drunk from small Burgundy-type wine glasses.
