“Bread and salt!” - this is how noble guests were greeted in Rus'. This is a traditional wish for goodness, prosperity, good appetite, and an expression of hospitality. Welcoming guests with bread and salt had another important meaning - salt was a kind of amulet; our ancestors believed that salt protected from hostile forces.

The origin of the word salt is connected with the Sun: the ancient Slavic name for the Sun is Sologne (that, by the way, was the name of the Macedonian city - now the Greek port of Thessaloniki); “to walk in salt” (an ancient expression), which means: “to walk along the Sun.”

Many Russian folk proverbs say: “Salt is the head of everything, without salt and life is grass”, “There is no salt and there is no word”, “Without salt the table is crooked”.

Salt is important for the human body. It is the most important seasoning in cooking. From an early age we know the taste of salt, without which food seems fresh.
